Once the center of power of the great Austro-Hungary, Austria was reduced to a small democracy aside their defeat in World War after annexation by Nazi Germany in 1938 and subsequent occupation by the Allies to win in 1945, the state of Austria, it was clear for a decade. The State Treaty signed in 1955 became end the occupation, recognized Austria's independence, and forbade unification with Germany.
A constitutional law that same year, he announced "the country of perpetual neutrality "as a condition for Soviet military withdrawal. After the collapse of the Soviet Union in 1991 and the first appearance of Austria in the European Union in 1995, a few Austrians have called into question this neutrality. A well-fixed, democratic country, Austria joined the European Economic and Monetary Union in 1999.
Austria is the most mountainous country due to its positioning in the Alps. Middle Eastern Alps, Northern Alps and Southern Limestone Limestone Alps are all partly in Austria. The whole area of Austria, only a quarter can be considered low, and only 32% of the nation is less than 500 meters (1,640 feet). The Alps mountain in the west of Austria flatten somewhat into low lands and plains in the east of the state.

Professional was the birthplace of many famous composers as Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Joseph Haydn, Franz Schubert, Anton Bruckner, Johann Strauss, father, Johann Strauss, Jr. or Gustav Mahler as well as members of the Second Viennese School such as Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern and Alban Berg. Ludwig van Beethoven spent most of his life in Vienna.
Complementing its status as a land of artists, Austria has always been a nation of poets, writers and novelists. It was the home of novelists Arthur Schnitzler, Stefan Zweig, Thomas Bernhard or Robert Musil, of poets Georg Trakl, Franz Werfel, Franz Grillparzer, Rainer Maria Rilke or Adalbert Stifter and writer Karl Kraus.
Famous novelists and playwrights are Elfriede Jelinek and Peter Handke. In the midst of artists and architects from Austria can find painters Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka, Egon Schiele or Friedensreich Hundertwasser, photographer Inge Morath and architect Otto Wagner.
Austria was the birthplace of many physical scientists admit Ludwig Boltzmann, Lise Meitner, Erwin Schrödinger, Ernst Mach, Wolfgang Pauli, Richard von Mises and Christian Doppler, philosophers Ludwig Wittgenstein and Karl Popper, biologists Gregor Mendel and Konrad Lorenz as well as mathematician Kurt Godel.
It was home to psychologists Sigmund Freud, Alfred Adler, Paul Watzlawick and Hans Asperger, psychiatrist Viktor Frankl, economists Joseph Schumpeter, Eugen von Böhm-Bawerk, Ludwig von Mises and Friedrich Hayek (Austrian School) and Peter Drucker, and engineers such as Ferdinand Porsche and Siegfried Marcus.
