Paul B. Newman

I saw Terry Bradshaw to speak in Tampa about a decade ago. One point he made was that, regardless of how much of a big shot you think you are, when you die, only close friends and family will be upset. He said that when he hears of a big celebrity that passes, he thinks, "Oh. He died. Hmm. What's for dinner?"
I took his point to be that rare is the life that makes a difference that people will be affected by its passage. I agree with this idea to Paul Newman died a few months. I was stunned and saddened by his death. So big and powerful as his film roles have been, that completely changed my life 20 years ago with a vision he shared during a TV interview I saw. In the interview, said he had always had the fear that one day someone will push through crowd, grabs my arm and say, "It's over. It was all a mistake. You are going to paint the houses…" I knew exactly what he meant. He was describing the underlying fear that his fortune is going to end and that someone will discover that you are a fraud. Psychologists call this "impostor syndrome."
It was at that pivotal moment to see this superstar apparently convinced that I understood that I was not the only person with this unique feeling of doubt. A feeling that their success is luck and somehow get away with it.
I thought that once he built a successful business and was receiving international recognition for my work self-confidence evaporated. However, my doubts came back with a new name, the impostor syndrome. The impostor syndrome is the feeling to be a fraud. Regardless of what is happening around you, there is a nagging feeling people will know that you're not as smart, skilled, or talented, as it believes it is. It's as if you are not the person who appears to be for the rest of the world. This current of doubt makes it difficult to strive for excellence because the more draw attention to himself, the more vulnerable you are to be unmasked.
Studies in the mid-1980s show that up to 70% of the Successful people Impostor Syndrome suffered to varying degrees. It is difficult to know exactly how many people have gained less or did not even try to succeed due to the impostor syndrome. Paul Newman and I had that same feeling, but in real life rather than a reality show. "Regardless of our levels individual success, there remain doubts cast a gray cloud of our future in light blue. Symptoms of impostor syndrome include:
1. A feeling of guilt that is carrying something.
2. A feeling that will be exposed as an intellectual fraud or false at some point.
3. Inability to get credit for their success, or even say "Thank You" to praise.
4. The feeling that people think they are better able than you think you are.
While Paul Newman touched millions with his actor, director, philanthropy, and living life on your terms, its influence in which simple interview changed the course of my life and helped me, in turn, impact the lives of tens of thousands of people. Thank you sir. Rest in peace.

Sweet Bird of Youth [VHS]
$4.85 Sweet Bird of Youth has the Tennessee Williams penchant for provocation and Southern depravity--although at this point, the bloom is somewhat off the hothouse flower. Paul Newman is a cad who dreams of glory; he's returned to his hometown towing a dissolute, over-the-hill Hollywood star (Geraldine Page re-creates her Broadway role), certain she'll be his meal ticket. He's ruined the only girl he r... |
