Only ten years ago visitors to the port of Baltimore were greeted by the sight of desolation grim and dilapidated industrial waterfront. But after a decade intensive regeneration of the area is not only aesthetically pleasing, and now prosperous, more importantly for the city that is generating a great deal of business and tourism revenues.
That is great news for the Development Corporation of the City of Baltimore (BDC) as expect companies inside and the east port areas will soon follow the example of Marriott became the first company to start paying income benefits in early January.
The Inner Harbor, Baltimore, which borders downtown, and the Ravens and Orioles Stadium, is now a major attraction for sports enthusiasts, the conference attendees and business travelers due to the number of quality hotels and facilities in the area. Much of that success to the vision of the BDC, which agreed a series of tax breaks innovative business tax ten years ago, designed to stimulate investment and major events throughout the port. Returning to develop the area City hopes to develop in the number of tourists and business travelers who could attract near Washington, DC, only an hour away.
Under the agreements of the companies received favorable benefits, such as minimum annual property taxes for a specified number of years in exchange for a percentage of profits future. Under those agreements of certain thresholds must be reached before the profit-sharing payouts occur, however, only six years after construction of the Marriott Waterfront became the hotel first in Baltimore to pay the City Development Corp. in the spirit of sharing agreements.
