
As part of the events carried out worldwide on February 2 to commemorate the World Wetlands Day, the Intercultural Center for Study of Deserts and Oceans (CEDO), Environment launched the XV Competition CEDO 2009, inviting the participation of students of all levels, teachers and other members of organizations and clubs special.
The annual environment competitions involving young people of Rocky through participation in order to strengthen their knowledge environment on a topic of particular interest to the local community projects include scientific field research, seeking solutions to major problems detected and the promotion of what they have learned with the rest of the community. Some of the topics covered in previous contests environment have included water shortages, wetlands organic waste and rocky reefs.
On this occasion, the 2009 CEDO Environmental Contest, entitled â € to € œFlying enda, is dedicated the conservation of migratory birds as a symbol of the connectivity between wetlands represented worldwide.
Many of the birds we can see in our region are actually visitors who travel thousands of miles each year. Since their breeding grounds in the coldest areas in the north, the birds migrate to spend the winter in warmer southern areas, where there is an abundance of food and enough hours of light daily, some other birds, including the least tern antillarum (Sternula) migrate from South America during the spring, in order to breed and nest in the estuaries of the region during the summer, wetlands represent a point important for migratory birds, allowing them prepare to continue along their routes. Wetlands provide water birds, a place of rest, food, nests and raise their young, as well as a protected place away from predators and inclement weather.
The objectives of 2009 â € CEDO Environmental Contest € œFlying ENDA to Include:
â € ¢ Conduct field investigations for students to learn about the main migratory birds come to this region.
â € ¢ community awareness of the importance of the marshlands that surround Puerto Penasco for migratory birds.
â € ¢ conservation actions to reduce some of the delights that are affecting migratory birds.
Competition on the Environment will develop since March 3, 2009 to April 24. The jury will include members of the community as well as subject specialists who will evaluate the activities of each team and select winners. Teams will be divided into two categories:
1) pre-school and primary and
2) Jr. Highs â € "high schools and higher education. The categories may change depending on the decision of the organizers, depending on the number of teams entered in each category. Each institution may participate with one or more computers. Teams will be assessed as dependent and the top 3 teams in each category will receive awards.
