Kingdom of Heaven takes place in Jerusalem during the Crusades of the 12th century. Orlando Bloom leads as an honest blacksmith named Balian. His wife commits suicide because her son was lost during delivery. Balian travels to Jerusalem to redeem his wife as his own soul.
Ridley Scott is a fantastic job developing the characters in the Kingdom of Heaven, especially Orlando Bloom's personality. Balian goes from average blacksmith Christian army chief in the battle to defend Jerusalem.
Balian father (Liam Neeson) admits he has had an imperfect life, but manages to teach some truths Balian basic before he died to protect the weak, to say the truth and follow their conscience. This film is a demonstration of how after some fundamental truths is the best way to radically change the world.
Balian is surrounded by politics and religion by man, but more important spiritual search. Want to put your faith in something real. At one point tells his friend, "I've lost my religion," to which his friend replies, "I do not put much faith in religion. "His friend goes on to explain that the true state of the human heart and mind is what really matters.
Balian mates encourage him to kill his arch enemy, Guy de Lusignan (Marton Csokas), while he has the chance. Doing this not only Balian to elevate the position of king, to avoid a war with Muslims would cost thousands of lives. But Balian decides to follow his conscience. He refuses to commit an evil little to prevent what appears to be a greater evil.
Balian takes decision the fall of Jerusalem and the annihilation of the Christian army. From the viewpoint of God, this was the right decision. Balian glow covers the secret of faith to trust God beyond their ability to contract numbers. In God's economy is better than "tell the truth, even if it leads to death" as Balian's father said. If Balian had committed his convictions he could have prevented the death of thousands of people, but honors God more substantially, trusting in his conscience. This demonstrates the general rule that God's priorities are more valuable than human life.
The Kingdom of Heaven demonstrates the futility of the religion by man. Throughout the film of reasonable men disagree with selfish, religious fanatics. Some Christian leaders foolishly singing "God simplify want to understand" just before they do something they know in their conscience to be wrong. Therefore, Balian of what is truly valuable, or what is truly God's will, is in striking contrast to the stupidity of religious people around him. Balian recognizes the fact that the brick and mortar are not as valuable as human life.

White Squall
$4.29 It's a pity this oceangoing adventure wasn't fully appreciated during its theatrical release in 1996, if only because its climactic storm sequence (hence the movie's title) was awesome on the big screen and inevitably less impressive on video. Mixed reviews also curtailed its box-office potential, but as you might expect from Ridley Scott--the director of Blade Runner and Thelma & Louise--this is ... |

A Good Year
$8.20 In a distinct break from their muscular triumph Gladiator, Russell Crowe and Ridley Scott teamed up again to bring Peter Mayle's sunny Provençal romance to the screen, a change of milieu that's spawned an equally warm, often sentimentally tinged soundtrack and score. Using a trio of pop songs by the great Harry Nilsson (including the joyous demo of Nilsson Schmilsson's "Gotta Get Up") as an axis ... |
