1.What really is American culture? 2.Do people adapting to American culture are automatically converted in America, regardless of where they were born?

I think that's exactly right. We do not have the mainstream culture, because they are and have always been a "melting pot" our country is so full of diversity with many influences of culture is incredibly fluid from one part to another country. I think it is not a unique culture everyone feels free to define refer to themselves as Americans rather than remain tied to their country of origin.
