An increase in conventional energy prices is based on the fact that, in late November, utilities reported an unexpected and rather strong drop in electricity consumption in the U.S.

As the Wall Street Journal, utilities have built their infrastructure around the expectation that sales of 1 percent to 2 percent. Their agreements with local and national regulatory bodies to build the transmission, distribution and plant capacity energy reflects this expectation, as most are now on the hook for hundreds of thousands of dollars in projects. If customers use less, utilities will have to raise rates to cover these costs.

Xcel Energy CEO Dick Kelly said that reduced energy use is likely a manifestation of recession, and advised to continue building the infrastructure in preparation for better times. Others, like Jim Rogers CEO of Duke Energy, feel that some fundamental paradigm shift is occurring, and are less optimistic.

If Rogers is correct, this reduction in consumption, resulting in high prices energy, you can create a sufficient level of parity between the conventional and solar energy to inspire more people to install solar panels, which leads to further reductions in conventional energy consumption and further price increases – a self-fulfilling feedback loop that can push this country into cleaner energy future, in spite of herself.
