I have a Canon A-1 camera with lens. Is there a digital camera body that will work with my Canon lens?

I have a Canon A-1 camera body with lens. Can I get a digital camera body that will work with my Canon lens? Or do I have to go out and buy a digital body and (more) camera lens too?

No, in 1988, Canon made all those excellent FD lenses obsolete when they introduced the EOS system. While in the late 1980′s and early 1990′s there were some very expensive adapters, they did not allow the older lenses to focus at infinity and of course the added optics in the adapter reduced the resolution of the lenses.

Many of us who had Canon’s at the time, either slowly moved over to the EOS system or took that opportunity to switch to Nikon.

The digital age has altered forever the way we take and view photos, not least because of the speed at which the final image can be produced and then passed on to other media. Professional photographers can have their pictures on the front page of a newspaper within minutes and holiday snaps can be swapped with friends only seconds after they’re shot.

Canon’s SELPHY CP range has been designed with this ‘instant gratification’ principle in mind and the latest model – the entry-level CP740 reviewed here – has just been released as updated versions of the CP720. It is designed to be ‘party printer’ that is light, compact, chic and easy to use, whilst still managing to produce high quality, economy-size snaps without having to go through a PC.

The basic CP740 unit weighs a mere 940g and its 179.0 x 127.1 x 63.0mm dimensions are smaller than a tiny loaf of bread. Its Apple-like creamy colour is clearly designed to complement your Mac and iPod and the expanded 2.0-inch LCD screen sits squarely in the middle of the top panel. Surrounding it is a range of buttons that control mode, layout, display and date, as well as an innovative and welcome auto-Red-Eye Correction via simple, self-explanatory icons.

The front panel contains four memory card slots that can deal with virtually any of the current versions of CF, SD, MMC, Memory Stick and xD. In addition, a discreet panel on the front-left hides an extendable USB cable that can be attached to PictBridge-enabled cameras or Canon Direct Print devices.

Unfortunately, the downside of this beautiful looking machine is the clunky method by which the phot tray is inserted in the front: a fair amount of huffing and puffing is needed to slot it in correctly. However, once in place you have five sizes to choose from (Postcard, Wide, L, Credit Card and Mini Stickers) and you can view each image full-screen before you print.

Print costs are reasonable at around 20p per postcard size photo using the larger photo pack Kp-108iP, the smaller KP-36iP is really only suitable if you plan to print very infrequently.

What is impressive is the quality of the finished image. Each print takes four passes to complete and it’s fascinating to see the sharpness and clarity gradually emerge (postcards take about a minute), with the final pass adding a high-gloss protective layer that protects from splashes, spills and fingerprints. The CP740 uses 300dpi dye-sublimation printing technology that leaves images virtually grain-free, as each printed dot has up to 256 intensity levels per colour.

If you’re feeling a little more flush with money, its big brother the more expensive CP750 has extra features like ‘My Colors’ photo effects (which include Black & White and Sepia), an optional battery pack and IrSimple compatiblity for infra-red printing from mobile devices. Both models have improved skin tone reproduction for enhanced flesh tones.

The SELPHY CP740 is light, compact, easy to use and cool, but its outstanding picture quality is slightly marred by the awkward loading process every time you’re preparing your photos, however that should not detract from the fact that for just over £60 you can be the proud owner of your very own portable photo lab.

What Lens Should I Buy For My New Canon EOS Rebel XTi?

I recently purchased a Canon EOS Rebel XTi (the body + the equipment), but no lens came with it. This is my first SLR camera, and I want to know – which lens is the best lens to start out with? Thanks, Alex.

I bought three Canon Digital Rebel cameras. Mine, one for my wife and granddaughter. I love mine.

I have several lenses for my Rebel, but the two that I end up using are the:

18-55mm Wide angle and,
75-300mm Telephoto

With those two lenses (which zoom from the low number to the high number) you can cover almost the entire range from 18mm (very wide) to 300mm (very telephoto).

EBay has great prices on these lenses, far less than a camera store. I went with the slightly more expensive IS (Image Stabilized) lenses that compensate for shake when you are shooting handheld images.

My wife is taking a lot of bird pictures at our feeders. I wanted to be able to get even closer shots, but I didn’t want to spend hundreds, or thousands, of dollars for a the “L” style lenses. What I ended up buying was a Quantaray 2X DG Teleconverter for Canon which doubles my lens to 150-600mm. I do see some image quality loss, but not enough to bother me. I paid $25 for the converter, but it would have been several hundred for a “Canon” solution in “L” lens and Converter to do the same thing.

Many Auto manufacturers have produced some retrospective styled cars and trucks in the last few years. We have the Mini, the Bug, the PT Cruiser and perhaps the sweetest of all is the Chevrolet HHR. The Chevy HHR is inspired by the 1949 Chevrolet Suburban.

This is one on the best looking and functional vehicles to roll off the Detroit lines right after WWII. The HHR stands for Heritage High Roof.
